What Can You Expect From Full Coverage Auto Insurance?

October 11th, 2009 by Gordon May

The terms of full coverage auto insurance can differ from state to state and from insurance provider to insurance provider. No matter what state you live in. When you have full auto insurance it should mean that you are covered for expenses if you are hit by another, underinsured driver, as well as medical expenses, repair costs and the costs of a liability lawsuit if you were at fault in an accident. Many people think that comprehensive auto insurance coverage is the same as full coverage auto insurance when it isn’t. Comprehensive cover pays for damage to your car due to fire, theft or vandalism and it usually pays for damage to someone else’s car and person if you are at fault in an accident. Full coverage on the other hand usually includes the following.

Collision and Comprehensive Insurance

Comprehensive insurance as above covers you in case of fire or theft and usually covers the cost of an accident where you are at fault. Collision insurance pays for damage to your vehicle whether it was you or someone else who was at fault.

Personal Injury Protection Insurance

Personal injury protection is the aspect of full cover insurance that pays for your and your passengers medical bills if you are involved in an accident. You can opt out of this aspect of full coverage insurance if you are already covered by your health insurance. If, however, you live in an area that has a high number of road accidents then you may want to have personal protection insurance on top of your medical insurance.

Liability Insurance

Liability insurance is that aspect of the cover that is designed to cover any legal fees and claims made against you. It is also meant to cover you for damages against another person’s automobile and their personal property. Most states require that you have at least minimum liability insurance and it is up to you whether you want to add the extra. It’s recommended that you do include this in your cover in case claims are made against you that you would not be able to pay under your present liability cover.

Uninsured Motorist Insurance

Uninsured motorist insurance is an aspect of full coverage that pays for your medical costs and auto repairs that may have been caused by uninsured or underinsured driver.

Full coverage auto insurance premiums will differ from one insurance company to another. Most insurers will add or deduct from premium costs depending on a number of factors. Young, inexperienced drivers are regarded as a greater insurance risk than more seasoned motorists. If you are under 25 and married then the insurance company may look on you more favorably because they regard married drivers as more responsible that unmarried drivers. Some insurers will also charge more depending on what grouping your automobile comes under. You should do some research and get a number of quotes before you settle on full coverage auto insurance.

Insurance companies have their own set of rules that decides who pays what in insurance premiums. Some of the rules that you may not have considered when you are looking for auto insurance are those surrounding your age, your marital status and the type of car that you drive.
